Seeking God

The humble shall see this and be glad; and you who seek God, your hearts shall live. Psalm 69:32
Two hundred and forty-three times in the Bible, believers are strongly urged to seek God. God is waiting for us to seek Him. “The LORD looks down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there are any who understand, who seek God” (Ps. 14:2). Those who seek God will continually experience revival in their lives (69:32). Isaiah said we are to seek God when He is calling out for us—when His presence is near and He is drawing us to Him! “Seek the LORD while He may be found, call upon Him while He is near” (Is. 55:6). Yet, the sad truth is that many Christians just don’t want to seek the Lord. “I sought for a man among them who would … stand in the gap before Me on behalf of the land … but I found no one” (Ezek. 22:30). So, what does it take to seek God?
  1. Devotion: A great love for God. “I love those who love me, and those who seek me diligently will find me” (Prov. 8:17). It’s going to take a great love on our part to find God. The fact that you need to seek after God diligently means that He is not immediately made known to you. As you grow in the Lord, you’ll come to a point in your Christian walk where God needs to know: Do you love Him for who He is? Or only for what He can do for you? If you want to find God, it requires your 100 percent devotion and nothing less. “For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of those whose heart is completely His” (2 Chr. 16:9, NASB).
  2. Diligence: Hard Work. “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Heb. 11:6). Waking up early in the morning before dawn to pray is hard work. Withdrawing yourself away from the fellowship of your friends to pray is not easy. But the reward will be great. As you engage yourself to seek the Lord, you will be rewarded with the blessings of knowing who He is.
  3. Dying to self. “And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple” (Luke 14:27). The cross is the place of crucifi xion where you hang all your pride, status, achievements, successes and failures—i.e. your whole life. Are you seeking God diligently today? Remember that only as we seek God diligently then will we find Him. Our spiritual life is an adventure with God and our revelation of who God is must grow more and more everyday. We cannot live today in yesterday’s revelation, “But the path of the just is like the shining sun, that shines ever brighter unto the perfect day” (Prov. 4:18).
