Prayer Opens Heaven

But certainly God has heard me; He has attended to the voice of my prayer. Psalm 66:19
God attends to the voices of prayer that rises from the earth. Whenever God’s people pray, He will respond from heaven. “When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land” (2 Chr. 7:13-14). Prayer is the key that unlocks heaven. This truth was so vividly experienced by Jesus at the Jordan River. While He prayed, the heaven was immediately opened. “When all the people were baptized, it came to pass that Jesus also was baptized; and while He prayed, the heaven was opened. And the Holy Spirit descended in bodily form like a dove upon Him, and a voice came from heaven which said, “You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased” (Luke 3:21-22).

Two things happen when heaven opens:
  1. The Holy Spirit will be poured out. That day when the heaven opened, the Holy Spirit descended like a dove upon Jesus. After Jesus was crucified, died and ascended into heaven, it seemed that the gospel message became silent. The workings of the Holy Spirit of miracles, signs and wonders seemed to cease from the earth. But on the Day of Pentecost in Jerusalem, 120 disciples were found praying in the upper room. Their prayers rose up to heaven and unlocked the outpouring of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:2).
  2. God will reveal Himself from heaven. At the Jordan, a voice was heard coming out of heaven. During the days of Eli the high priest, heaven was shut and there was no widespread revelation because of the wickedness committed at the altar of God (1 Sam. 3:1). However, when the boy Samuel began to minister before the Lord, heaven began to open and the word of the Lord went forth to Israel again.
Is heaven open over your life? Are you having a fresh revelation of who God is? The key to an open heaven is prayer. Hosea 10:12 says, “Sow for yourselves righteousness; reap in mercy; break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the LORD, till He comes and rains righteousness on you.” God is still attending to the voices of prayer from His people. Stay committed to prayer and each time you pray, pray until God shows up.
