School's out! That means a three month break for the school-aged children. I remember what a relief it was to not have to be ready for school each morning. No exams or quizzes or homework assignments or projects—what a nice break it was. Our family didn't take many vacations since my dad was self-employed. We had little opportunity to take time off. Summer meant helping my parents in their business by doing what I was capable of accomplishing.
One year when I was ten years old, my dad and mom planned a vacation to Wildwood, New Jersey. As we all climbed into our new Chevrolet and traveled along the Pennsylvania Turnpike, how exciting it was to be together as a family going to the Atlantic Ocean to jump the waves and sun bathe.
That experience still brings a smile to my face when I recall the family bonding that took place and the memories which were created as a result. I remember eating seafood virtually every night at the same restaurant that we enjoyed. I remember wearing my first rubberized shoes to protect my feet from shells and rocks on the ocean floor. We enjoyed the boardwalk with all of its shops and attractions. We had fun and family time in a relaxed and rejuvenating way.
This summer is a great opportunity to spend time with your family. With longer lasting daylight, you can plan to do fun things like family outings, barbeques, lawn games and sporting events. You don't need to go on an expensive vacation, but with a little planning, you can achieve some sort of get-away for your family.
Have some summertime fun and create memories that will last a life time.
